Storytime Characters

Two toddlers readying a book together at Bright Horizons day care

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to understand and interact with books and text. Rich “book discussions” build children’s critical thinking skills and comprehension. Reading and discussing literature as a family increases a child’s love for reading.

Materials Needed:

  • 3-4 favorite children’s books

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.

Directions:

  1. Read your favorite family picture books together.
  2. Ask your child to choose a favorite character. What did the character do? What is the character like? Would your child change anything about the character if they were the author?
  3. Now play this guessing game together: take turns choosing a character from one of the books you selected (don’t share yet). Ask yes/no questions, such as, “Is this character an adult or a child?” or “Does this character play a main/small role?” Keep asking questions until the other person can identify the character.
