Materials Needed:
- Craft sticks, chopsticks, or small sticks from outside
- Twine, string, rubber bands, or thin wire
- Materials for decorating your raft: collage materials (gems, pom-poms, googly eyes, stickers, etc.)
- Crayons, markers, pencils, paper
Directions for string or twine:
- Gather all of the materials and find a flat space to work. Take a stick and tie a length of string to it. Make sure that it is nice and tight.
- Take a second stick and twist the string or twine around the next stick.
- Repeat this process until enough sticks have been added to form the raft.
- Decorate and enjoy floating your raft!
Directions for rubber bands:
- Take a stick and twist a rubber band around it twice.
- Take a second stick and twist the rubber band around the next stick.
- Repeat this process until enough sticks have been added to form the raft.
- Decorate and enjoy floating your raft!
Once your raft is complete, it’s time for the float test! Fill up a sink or bin with water and let your child try out their raft. Observe if it floats. If not, ask them what they can change. Give them time to improve their design and try again!
Toddlers: Toddlers love to make things sink and float! During bath time, give them some cups and containers to experiment with floating on the surface of the water, sinking below, and filling and dumping with water.
