Color Jars

The Color Monster

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to express, understand, and regulate emotions

Materials Needed:

  • The book “Color Monster” by Anna Llenas (or view a video of it online)
  • Colored construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Crayons or markers
  • Tape

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction, and 2 or more participants/players.

Directions:

  1. Read or listen to the story “Color Monster” by Anna Llenas.
  2. Gather pieces of colored construction paper in red, green, yellow, and blue.
  3. Cut the papers into the shape of a jar (or any shape you choose).
  4. With your child, name the feeling words that you associate with each color (example: blue- sad, shy, lonely; yellow- excited, joy, warmth). Then write the words on each color shape.
  5. Hang the color shapes in a central location in your home. Have each family member use the shapes to help them name and identify their feelings throughout the day.
  6. Discuss or create actions and strategies to express or cope with their feelings. (example: excited- dance; sad- cuddle with a favorite toy, etc.)
