This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to reflect on what it means to be brave and care for others. Reading high-quality children’s literature together is a great way to spark thoughtful discussions about positive character development.
Materials Needed:
- “Brave Irene” by William Steig (or visit Storyline Online for the read-aloud)
- Box
- Scarf
Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.
Directions:
- Read the story together or watch it online.
- Discuss the story together. What hard things did Irene do? What might have happened if she had given up? What would your child do in her stead?
- Offer a few props from the story, such as a box and a scarf. Encourage your child to act in the story.
