Time Capsule

Girl smiling while developing a time capsule at childcare center

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to reflect on the last year, who they are now, and how they may change in the future.

Materials Needed:

  • Crayons, markers, etc.
  • Paper
  • Tape
  • Jar, cleaned out coffee can, or other container

Participants:

This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.

Directions:

  • Step 1: Discuss the concept of the new calendar year. Ask, how old were you this time last year? How old are you now?
  • Step 2: Ask your child to write down some memories from the past year or even recent weeks. Your child may draw pictures, dictate sentiments, or use inventive spelling. Ask, what is your favorite thing to eat right now? What is something we did as a family that you loved? What is your favorite color? What book do you love to read right now? (Encourage everyone in the home to make their own memory sheet, too!)
  • Step 3: Decorate your time capsule. Take a piece of paper and label it “2021 Time Capsule”. Ask your child to decorate the label and tape it to the outside of the container. Store your time capsule in a safe place to be opened together at the end of 2022.
