Toddler gazing up and smiling in his classroom at daycare

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to demonstrate use of creativity & imagination in learning.

Materials Needed:

  • None!

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction or 2 or more participants/players.

Directions:

  1. Say a few words that rhyme—cat, mat, sat, for example.
  2. Ask your child to think of a word that rhymes with the one you just said.
  3. Now throw in a few nonsense words, such as grat, or trat. Did your child notice?
  4. Think of other nonsense words and make definitions for them.

Shakespeare invented over 400 words. Can your family come up with a few? Maybe a grat, for example, is the feeling you get when you walk through grass barefoot!
